Historically cologne was invented out of necessity. One’s nose was constantly bombarded with unpleasant odors such as smoke, spoiled food and sewers. Remember, refrigeration was not what it is today and people did not bathe nearly as frequently as they do now. These days, however, cologne is more of a luxury and not a necessity. Further, it has evolved to the point that there are now colognes that are specifically designed to help men attract women.
There will be more on that within this article when we actually get to the list. But for now, let’s do a quick run down of the types of cologne. After all you don’t want to wish to find an earthy smell and come home smelling like a rose, do you? As with everything, the prices vary. You can get some colognes in a drug store for rating10 or under or you can spend hundreds on one bottle of cologne depending on the brand. So, as with everything what you are looking to spend does play a factor in what you will wind up with.
Aromatic cologne is herbal based. Think of it this way, if you can cook with it, it is aromatic. Chyper colognes are the mossy or woodsy type that are harmonious with something of the citrus variety, normally bergamot. These types almost always include something called patchouli. Citrus colognes are the ones that come from the citrus fruits. Floral colognes come from flowers. Then there are the woodsy ones that are scented by wood and finally the leather ones. When people say they are looking for a masculine scent, they normally mean one of those two.
Without further adieu, here are the nominations for the best men’s cologne of all time.
01. The Attract Woman Pheromone Cologne
This is the previously mentioned cologne created to attract women. Be aware that there is a separate one made for men to attract gay men. This one will NOT work for that–it is to help men attract women. One spray should be enough as this is a very strong cologne. There is a mild moisturizing effect that helps with sensitive skin. As far as the smell goes, it has undertones of wood and orange. One or two sprays is sufficient and it should last for three months. It is still within drug store range of prices for cologne…or at the very least it is not department store price range. There it is a good enough price with as good as it smells to give it a try whether you have the results for what it is for that you think you will or not.
02. Tommy Hilfiger for Men 3.4 oz.
It has spicy notes to it and its base notes are milk, moss and sweet vanilla. It is regarded by many people as a classic fragrance. As I have stated in other articles about other things…you need to be careful if buying this on Amazon because of the possibility of being sold a knockoff.
03. Versace Eros Eau de Toilette Spray 3.4 oz.
This one is more expensive than what else is on the list so far. For some people that might be able to be offset by that it is recommended for daily wear. It smells like a cross between vanilla and mint and somehow has the undertone of the smell of the ocean. You can feel better about buying this one on Amazon there are several reviews stating that it is genuine. Normally, when it is not genuine, there are reviews complaining about it. This is not a heavy scent as a lot of the colognes designed to be worn at night are…but it lasts for hours and could in theory be worn all day. You will probably like it if you are not looking for a strong woods type scent.
04. Drakkar Noir by Guy Laroche 6.7 oz.
This is the biggest bottle on the list so far. It is recommended as a casual scent but is going to be a heavier scent than the previous mentioned Versace, As with any fragrance, please be advised that even factors as innocuous as your own smell changing can change how a fragrance smells on you. Also, how something smells on someone else is no reflection on how it is going to smell on you. Because this fragrance is perceived as old fashioned and dated if you are the type that actually cares what people in general think, you might get laughed at. But it is an excellent date night fragrance. For some women it has the effect of the first cologne without actually being that.
05. Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit De L’homme Eau de Toilette Spray
This one is department store range pricing. As with some of the other things on here, buyer beware if you are going to use amazon–there are several complaints of getting knockoffs. Now, La Nuit De L’homme is regarded as a fall/winter fragrance. Its most prominent notes are bergamot and cardamom. Another thing to be aware of with this fragrance is, it has been reformulated recently–the new one does not stay smelling on you for more than a hour or two. So it is probably only worthwhile if you loved the original to the point of now being willing to reapply this one several times a day.
06. Happy by Clinique For Men 3.4 oz.
If you are looking for a purely citrus scent, this is the one for you. Its notes are lemon, mandarin, orange and grapefruit. Obviously as light a fragrance as this is, it is recommended for daytime use. I would advise against buying this one on Amazon because of all the reviews stating that they got a knockoff. Buying it at the store does cost quite a bit more–but to me it is worth it to spend the extra money in order to make sure that you got the real deal.
07. Halston 1-12 by Halston for Men 4.2 oz.
This one is the cheapest one on the list. It does warn you not to apply it to sensitive skin. Its undertones and light floral, wood and musk. If you are one of those men that enjoy the scent of rich shaving cream and vanilla, you will really like this scent. Frankly at this price, if the scent sounds agreeable, it is hard not to just try it once.
08. Mambo by Liz Claiborne for Men 3.4 oz.
I would feel confident buying this one on amazon as there are not a lot of complaints about knockoffs. This scent is another one that is good at attracting women. It has orange, bergamot, musk and patchouli. That is recommended for casual use and while it can obviously be worn by anybody, it seems to be a favorite of the older male.
09. Guess by Parlux For Men. Eau De Toilette Spray
I would beware of buying this one on Amazon though. There are some complaints about knockoffs. Actually, upon further analysis this one says it’s from Guess but by another company. That should be a dead giveaway that it is not a genuine fragrance. The original Guess for Men is wonderful, but this isn’t it. And another interesting thing…this is a repeat instance of seeing the phrase “not for sale in Catalina Island” The Versace listed earlier in this article did not say that and it had no complaints of being a knock off. If you google why you can’t buy from Catalina Island (if you were wondering Catalina Island is one of California’s channel islands off the coast of Los Angeles), it will say its about regulations of chemicals. If that is true, then why does it not say that on every listing but only the ones that are suspected fakes?
10. Iris, Energy Of The Sea Cologne Spray 3.3 oz.
Even though this article pertains to men’s’ cologne, it is still worth noting that this is the first unisex cologne on this list. It has base notes of sandalwood and clove and top notes of lemon and marine…smells like the ocean in a bottle. Further, this Irish perfume is made locally in Ireland. It is one of the more expensive ones on this list…but the smell is so spectacular that it is worth it. If you like the ocean, knowing that this company donates a portion of every purchase to the Dolphin and Whale Fund of Ireland just might convince you to purchase it.
11. Lucky You by Liz Claiborne
This one has a major discount from its retail price. But there should be complaints about it being fake if it was and there isn’t; actually there are reviews stating the reverse. This is a citrus scent so if you are looking for a heavy masculine scent, this is not what you want. That noted it is a strong cologne; one spray is all you need. However, it also needs to be noted that the same one only lasts a couple of hours. But given this discount, I personally would say that is forgivable.
12. Hugo Boss No. 6 3.3 oz.
Most of us have at least heard of this one. Hugo Boss is to men’s fragrances what Tag Heuer is to men’s watches. There is also a 6.7 oz. bottle that sells for a bit more, obviously. It says on amazon page that it is manufactured in United Kingdom and that is not for sale in Catalina Island. Hugo Boss originates in Germany so it does not make immediate sense that it is manufactured in the UK. Further it has the warning about Catalina Island. If you check amazon, sure enough there are warnings that it is a knockoff. It is a good scent if you buy the actual one, but buyer beware.
13. Jovan Musk for Men 8 oz.
This one is the biggest bottle on the list and the price is not bad either coming in at the high end of the drug store pricing. It is recommended for romantic use and its notes are unspecified spices, lavender and citrus. Don’t let the lavender or citrus fool you though, this scent does an excellent job of bringing out a man’s natural scent. The only drawback is some men will use this as an aftershave. I would not because of the possibility of the alcohol stinging an open shaving wound.
14. Dolce & Gabbana, The One For Men 3.3 oz.
When one hears of the Italian boys Dolce & Gabbana, we often think of women’s things. That’s okay a lot of what they design is for women. In fact, this one has a women’s version to it as well. But in my earlier research on the Versace cologne, this one was recommended. So when I saw that I was about to have the same cologne on the list twice, I decided to take a look at this one. The great thing about this cologne is it does last all day. So bear that in mind if you are going to balk at the price tag. It is also unique because not many colognes have a tobacco note in them. This fragrance is ideal for dates or important business meetings but because of how it projects it is not ideal for partying in crowds. If you are going to buy an expensive cologne and only want one, depending on what kind of scent you want, consider this one.
15. Armani Code For Men 4.2 oz.
This is another one that even though it is pricey comes highly recommended in several places. There is a woman’s version of this as well. This is another long lasting fragrance, provided you spray it on one of the pulse points. The wrist is the easiest. It is somewhat pricey at rating68 but worth it in my opinion. It is a mild pleasant scent that lasts for hours.
In conclusion, there is no one cologne that works for everyone. The best one for you will depend on many factors. The most notable one being how much do you want to spend? If you are looking to spend rating20 or less and not worry about whether it is genuine or not, go with Lucky You by Liz Claiborne, Mambo by Liz Claiborne, Jovan Musk or Halston.
The next (and just as important) question is what kind of scent do you want? If you want a straight citrus scent, the winner is Happy by Clinique. If you want an ocean scent, you want Iris, Energy of the Sea. If you want the old-fashioned familiar this is what my dad smelled like, go with Drakkar Noir or Jovan Musk. Jovan Musk is not as dated as Drakkar Noir…but it is the most excellent of them all at bringing out a man’s natural scent. If you are looking for cologne that people will assume you have status because you are wearing it, you want either The One by Dolce & Gabanna or Armani Code. Armani Code lasts longer than almost any cologne on the market where a lot of them on this list have to be reapplied every couple of hours. So, feel free to tell yourself that for purposes of justifying the cost…even if you are label obsessed and just want to wear that label. Nobody but you needs to know that.
